The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility

The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility (the “Tenure Facility”) is a unique new institution that provides grants to advance land and forest tenure security and the rights and livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. In less than one year, the six initial pilot projects have increased tenure security in more than 300,000 hectares of forests managed by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, enhanced the capacities of the local community organizations, and tested new protocols for securing community tenure rights with government agencies. Pilots in Peru, Indonesia, and Cameroon, in particular, illustrate a more cost-effective approach for governments, communities, and civil society to secure tenure at scale.
